Remix Fight FAQ

What is Remix Fight?

Remix Fight! is a remixing community open to everyone. We get people to send us source files for their songs and then make that source available for download. People download that source, make a remix, and then e-mail an mp3 of their mix to us. Then, we post all the mp3s we’ve received and set up a poll so that visitors to the site can listen to the mixes and vote on which one they like the best. After a couple weeks, we close the poll and announce a winner.

That sounds great, so what do I win?

The respect and admiration of your peers (we hope), a shoutout on the front page, and a little bit of text (soon to be a snazzy graphic!) next to your name on the archive page for the fight. No money changes hands, no fancy gifts are mailed out, Hollywood producers probably won’t be calling you to collaborate with the next Britney Spears.

So what’s the point in playing if I don’t win anything?

It’s fun. Also, there is an active community of remixers chatting it up over in the forum. You can read reviews of your mix written by your fellow competitors, write scathing reviews of the other mixes in the fight, find people to collaborate with and so on.

I’ve finished my mix, where do I send it?

E-mail an mp3 of your mix (192 kbps max) to entries@remixfight.org. In the body of the e-mail, include the name of the fight you are submitting to, the name you are submitting under, the name of your mix, a link to your website, and a small blurb about the mix (optional).

What about copyright issues?

Most of the songs that we remix are submitted by members of the community or other artists who are making particular songs available for free. By submitting a mix to Remix Fight! you are agreeing to make it available under the Creative Commons Music Sharing License, which basically says that people can download, distribute and perform (i.e. webcast) your mix without paying you any money. Follow the link for the full description. Basically, we just want to be able to host a copy of your mix so that we can keep a public archive of all the past fights.

The loops/source provided by Remix Fight are licensed under the Creative Commons NonCommercial-Sampling+ License, which gives you permission to make a remix and distribute it, provided you don’t charge people for it. If you want to put your mix on a CD that you plan to sell, it would be a good idea to contact the artist of the original track and ask for permission or work out some sort of arrangement. Communication of this type is not within the scope of the Remix Fight admins. Often, you can find the original artist on the forum and contact them with a private message.

The original song retains its copyright and is not included in the same license as the loops. This may sound silly, but the distinction is this: You may distribute, perform and otherwise make freely available your remix, but if the original song has a copyright that prohibits free distrubution or public performance, the fact that you were allowed to make a remix does not mean that you have the right to freely distribute or publicly perform the original work. For the most part, the songs we remix are freely available anyway, so you can pretty much disregard this paragraph.

When making a remix, are we limited to the loops provided, or can we mix in loops from other sources (assuming no copyright problems)?

You can certainly use outside loops or sounds in a remix. Some fighters consider it a challenge and badge of honor to only use provided loops. Ethics aside, copyright problems are only a problem when someone complains. So if you have a cool idea that requires yanking something out of a commercial track, go for it. But be aware that if the hammer comes down, your song might be pulled from the website.

I’ve got this killer song and I want y’all to remix it!

Awesome. We’re always looking for songs to remix. If you’ve got a song that you’d like to hear the Remix Fight community mangle, start a thread in the “Got something to remix?” forum. We will contact you if there is a positive response.

How do I get a bio on my artist page?

E-mail your bio to admin@remixfight.org. It could include a picture of yourself or some other enigmatic object representing you, where you live, what you use to make remixes, and pretty much whatever else you feel like talking about (we reserve the right to edit out offensive text). If you send a picture, make sure that it is no wider than 200px. If you send something wider, we will resize it before posting it and it might not look as awesome as you’d like.

Can I submit cover art to Remix Fight?

Please do! We’re not picky, we’ll post as many as we get. Please send two versions: one of them full size (currently there is no standard but be reasonable) and the other 200X200 pixels. We will resize it if you only send one file and it might look crappy. So, you’ve been warned. The place to send your cover art is entries@remixfight.org.

I totally found a dead link on your website!

Sometimes these things happen. Please report this and any other problems you have with the site to admin@remixfight.org. We will address the problem as quickly as possible.
